Telling Our Stories

SOL is dedicated to putting the stories of immigrant and non-immigrant alike at the heart of our California's most vibrant policy debates. The stories gathered here are of ordinary people, who have taken on the most vexing issues in their communities.

For generations, people have journeyed here for a better life. They have come from every state in the union, and every corner of the earth. They were drawn here because this state has been blessed with remarkable prosperity.

Some came, because here their hard work would finally be rewarded with a decent living. And others came, escaping from war, violence and persecution, to a place where they might live peaceful dignified lives.

Once here, these newcomers lived lives of sacrifice. Many soon prospered. Others, despite having better lives than what they had left behind, never fully shared in the blessings of this great state.

These are their stories. The stories of ordinary people, who still very much believe that California is the place where a better life is possible. Despite often struggling to make ends meet, they have also dedicated their lives to their community.
