Issues that Matter Campaigns

"No on Arnold, November 2005.

In November of 2005, Governor Schwarzenegger's Special election ballot initiatives threatened to turn back protections that working people had long ago won. The election tested the ability of the Governor to impose his will on working people in the state.

SOL quickly opened up campaign offices in the four Los Angels County locations (El Monte, Commerce, the San Fernando Valley, and Downtown / East LA) as well as Orange County. Our walkers and our targeting made the difference. Our walkers were credible messengers, community and labor activists from the neighborhoods. We targeted by triple ID'ing supporters: 1) in person, 2) by mail and 3) by phone. It worked. We got 73% of our voter to the polls. This was well over 25% higher than the average voter turnout!

At that time we were able to get to our highest number of contacts to date 49,625 and we mailed and called an additional 60,000. Most impressive was our ability to get out Latinos who had not voted in many years. Among our target audience group only 26% voted, but of those we spoke with 63% voted. And among people who only voted once in the last five elections we bumped up turnout 21% among those who have voted twice in the last 5 elections we bumped up turnout to 16%.

Because SOLs precinct walkers were real people, they were able to relate to, convince and turnout voters on election day.
