Why Can't Politicians Ever Talk About Poverty?

The answer is simple. Even voters who live in poverty do not identify themselves as low income and are 100% bought in on the American dream (a deteriorating one) that rags to riches stories are around the corner and that their children will be have a better life than they.

As I scanned the post State of the Union address and heard yet another great President Obama speech and delivery I could not stop thinking about why we never, ever discuss poverty. I feel like a little boy telling my dad, "I neber get to do nutin."

As Local, State and Federal agencies struggle to meet deficits corporate profits are plentiful once again. Investments are showing returns and the corporate bonuses are back! Hampered by partisan gridlock, corporate media and the self-interested political elite, the regular people (Main Street is such a lame & abstract metaphor) continue to see losses of jobs, wages and homes. Meanwhile, our public education system is no longer the envy of the world while you need a Black Card Visa to go to college, if there is room.

Why not pose this question: “Where do regular Americans work?”

SOL registers our 100,000th voter!

It has been a long time since we started voter registration. It was in 2007 when we began with all these bright ideas about how we would do things. We had a culture shock when we realized how hard this work really is. But thanks to our hard working team Blanca, Patty, Miguel, Norma, Jessica, Jose, Martha, Citlalli, Gustavo, Elizabeth, Miguel, Ismael, and mayra we have figured this thing out pretty good.

With our internship program I think we are in great shape with our soon come come generation of civic leaders. They are bringing fresh ideas and tactics and really doing a great job. You will hear more from them. They have produced great videos on how to register voters and some really great grass roots efforts.

Good job to Francis, Rafa, Martha, and Fermin on all their work. Check it out at www.sol-california.com/wtt

Welcome to Strengthening Our Lives (SOL)

Thank you for visiting us. Strengthening Our Lives (SOL) is a grass roots political organization looking to help build a greater voice for working class and immigrant communities in California. For too long our communities have fallen under attack, been neglected and we see the effects in our community's health, poverty, public schools, and general decay.

As we build our voice together we will change this. One voter, one door, one contact, and one heart at a time. Enjoy our site and feel free to contact us.

Strengthening Our Lives (SOL) is a 501C4 non-profit organization. We do community and field organizing. We also have a Political Action Committee (PAC). We are a partnership of labor and community leaders.  SOL was originally formed and funded by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and has board members from UNITE HERE and Los Angeles Federation of Labor Unions.

Since inception we have won 24 elections and only lost 4 races. SOL election work is typically via labor funded independent expenditures.

Off election cycle we have focused our work on leadership development of our grass roots activists as well as on voter registration. In August of 2009 we registered our 100,000th new voter. We don’t just do voter registration we do it well! We attempt to verify, over the phone, all registrations, and have a verification rate of over 55%. Verification, along with our database cross-reference allows us to detect and avoid fraud.

To date, SOL has done voter registration drives in Santa Clara, Fresno, Kings, Tulare, Kern, Los Angeles and Orange Counties.  Over the next two years we hope to expand to the Inland Empire and Ventura counties. We also hope to integrate issue campaigns to our drives to push for positive policy reforms to important issues as well as to keep our elected officials feet to the fire while we educate and organize residents to be more civically minded and aware.
